Syrian refugees return home as Israel pounds Lebanon amid rising conflict

For years Lebanon was a refuge for Syrians fleeing conflict, but as Israel's war in Lebanon intensifies, thousands of Syrian refugees are now crossing back into their home country. Since 28 February, more than 80,000 Syrians have returned through land crossings, with 43 per cent of them children, according to the UN. Many, like Amal and her family, are fleeing violence in Lebanon by foot with only what they can carry, returning to a Syria still struggling to rebuild after more than a decade of war. Israel's 2024 airstrikes damaged border infrastructure, but the Arida crossing reopened on Sunday as displacement from Lebanon accelerates.

Al Jazeera's Obaida Hitto reports from the Syria-Lebanon border.
