Parts of Nairobi are submerged following heavy rains, with several people killed by floodwaters and vehicles swept away. Such flooding is blamed on decades of poor urban planning, inadequate drainage systems, and illegal settlements along rivers and other water bodies. Weather experts had warned of heavy rains, but authorities struggled to prepare. More than 100 people died in similar floods last year. The meteorological department says rains are expected to continue for weeks until May, with residents bracing for further destruction whilst calling on the government to implement better flood management measures.
